IMPROVE WEBSITE RANK USING SEO (CHAPTER- 1) | INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

SEO is an essential practice that optimises a website by improving its internal and external factors to increase the traffic it receives from search engines. Firms specialising in SEO can have different approaches, some focusing on the technical aspects while others taking a broader approach. Optimising a website for search engines can involve looking at multiple unique elements, making SEO a wide website optimisation field. Over the past few years, the search engine market and SEO practices have undergone significant changes.

The significant change has been the advancement and dominance of Google. Interestingly, Google handles almost 60% of all Web searches. Yahoo and Microsoft Network (MSN) are the other major search engines used in the United States, and these three search engines are responsible for over 90% of all searches. It’s worth mentioning that recent research has revealed that 60% of search engine users only click on sites on the first page of the search results – the top ten results. Very few users seem to connect beyond the third page of search results.

Your website’s users are the ones who consume most of your content, and they usually use search engines to find it. Although optimising your website for search engines is essential, it may not always guarantee the desired results. The main goal of SEO is to ensure that your website receives maximum visibility in search engine results. Still, it’s essential to remember that your ultimate goal is to cater to the needs of your users, not the search engines.

1.2 Motivation

As the Internet continues evolving, web applications are becoming increasingly popular. A multitude of websites are being established by institutions and individuals, publishing various technical data, business information, and other content. This has led to a rapid expansion of online communication, most of which is unstructured and presented as a page on a website. Although some information may be helpful to specific users, most of it is irrelevant. Hence, when designing websites, designers must include a page search function to enable users to quickly and efficiently find the necessary pages.

Designers need to ensure complete search functionality on websites. With the rise of the Internet and the proliferation of websites, people have increasingly relied on search engines to find information. As a result, there is fierce competition among website owners to rank high in search results and attract more visitors. This is where SEO comes in – it’s a technique used to improve the visibility of a website or web page in search results.

Generally, the higher a website appears on the search results page, the more frequently it seems and the more visitors it will receive from search engine users. SEO can target various types of searches, such as image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, what people are searching for, the keywords or search terms that users type into search engines, and which search engines are chosen by the target audience.

Optimising a website involves editing its content, HTML, and associated coding to increase its relevance to specific keywords and remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Another SEO tactic is promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks (BL) or inbound links (IBLs). HTML is the primary markup language used to display web pages and other information that can be displayed in a web browser.

1.3 Problem statement

Improving the low PR, traffic, usage, and number of visitors of a WP website is a crucial aspect of successful research. To achieve this, the researcher must incorporate effective SEO techniques that can help improve the website’s rank and traffic. This, in turn, will increase the website’s usage and visibility, thereby enhancing the website owner’s business prospects. Addressing the following questions can help identify the problems in achieving these objectives:

  1. How can website owners improve their rank, traffic, usage, and visibility?
  2. How can we use SEO techniques to achieve a higher ranking on the first page of search engine results pages (SERPs)?

1.4 Research Objectives

The primary objective of this thesis is to employ effective SEO techniques to enhance the rank, traffic, usage, and visibility of WP websites. This will significantly benefit website owners by improving their SERP rankings, increasing visitors, and enhancing their business prospects. The researcher will conduct the study using a WP website to verify the impact of SEO techniques on the website’s SERP. If the website receives more visitors after implementing the SEO techniques, the researcher will have achieved the main objective of the thesis. However, if the website fails to attract more visitors, the researcher will need to reapply the SEO techniques and methods to improve the website’s performance.
The objectives can be concluded as follows:

To enhance the website’s ranking, traffic, usage, and visibility, it is recommended to utilise Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) techniques.

Help Web site owners to get the first positions in SERP, increase visitors, and enhance their business.

1.5 Research Scope

To comprehend SEO, it is essential to understand how search engines operate. There are three primary types of web search engines: crawler-based search engines, human-powered directories, and hybrid search engines.

However, SEO only applies to crawler-based search engines utilised by more prominent search engines such as Google and Yahoo. The crawler-based search engines consist of three key elements: the spider or crawler, the index, and the search engine software. SEO relies on search engine concepts and involves several stages: website preparation, on-site optimisation, off-site optimisation, and result measurement. The researcher will employ a practical website to demonstrate how SEO analysis can be implemented, how on-site/off-site factors can be optimised, and how the effects of SEO on the website’s rank, traffic, usage, and visibility can be verified.

Off-site optimisation is a crucial aspect of any online marketing strategy. To drive more traffic to your website, we will implement a link-building campaign focusing on generating nonreciprocal links. Our goal is to increase visibility and improve search engine rankings for your website. We will also build deep ties to your site’s internal pages to optimise its overall search engine.

After conducting a thorough analysis using the Web Master Google tool, I could trace the reports and conclude. The methodology used to achieve these results is detailed in Chapter 4 of the research. Additionally, Figure 1.1 provides a brief overview of the methods employed in this study.
